Kindersley Closes Off The Preseason With An OT Victory

This post game report is brought to you by CalFrac Well Services.

After two tough games out in the AJHL I didn't know what to expect last night at the WCEC. It was the Klippers 3rd game in as many nights and they had to play with a shorthanded roster. All of that didn't matter though as the Klippers would defeat a tough Humboldt Broncos team that dressed 13 of it's returning players. Those players included the likes of Josh Roach, newly acquired Andrew Johnston, Adam Antkowiak, and Ward Szucki.

Kindersley played a great team game last night from the net out. In net Fraser Abdallah got his first full full game of action in and he was stellar. The 19 year old made a number of big saves, and really impressed with his solid rebound control. Everything that came at him was smothered and covered. He really made a solid bid for the teams backup goaltender to start the season. For Fraser it could come down to if Patrick Johnston comes back from the Saskatoon Blades. If Johnston does come back down Abdallah will be a tough decision for the Klippers team.

The Klippers blueline seems to be getting better each game. They are young and as you would expect need time to adjust. Youngster Jeremy Leclerc is starting to get more comfortable with the SJHL game. I know the Klippers have been impressed with the 16 year olds play and he has likely earned a spot on the opening day roster. 18 year old SJ rookies Brett Blatz, Morgan Eaton and Aaron Leterneau also had strong showings last night and were able to shut down the high powered Broncs offense.

Kindersley was shut out the night before out in Brooks but last night they found a way to score. Mitchell Schwark got his first of the preseason to open the Klippers scoring. Austin McDonald feathered a perfect pass on to the tape of Schwark who buried to tie the game early in the 3rd period. The Klippers 2nd goal was scored by Ryan Elliot who finally got the monkey off his back. Elliot has really played well this preseason and has been creating solid scoring chances but just hasn't been able to find twine. That changed last night and will likely give him some confidence heading into the season.

In overtime Taylor Duzan scored the game winner on a great individual 1-on-1 effort. Duzan showed his strength as he drove to the outside and worked the puck towards the net. It really was the perfect ending to a grueling preseason for the Kindersley Klippers.

So where does that leave us now?

The Klippers currently have 25 players on the roster, 15 of them forwards, 8 d men and 2 goalies.

Here is the Klippers updated depth chart as of last night.

In terms of how many players the Klippers will start the season with really depends on injures at this point. If the Klippers can get everyone healthy in time I would say they only keep 23 players. If a few guys need a bit of extra time to recover they could carry 24 or 25. You also have to consider the fact that a few other guys could arrive over the next week from the WHL. The Klippers have over a week off now to prepare for the season opener next Friday against Battlefords.

Rockie Zinger elaborates on the roster situation more in an interview below. I also had a conversation with Klippers rookie forward Austin McDonald.
