Game Summary
First off that was one exciting game to watch. The mixed emotions in that hockey game for Klipper fans was literally like a roller coaster. After one period of action, the Klipper fans had to be optimistic despite being tied 1-1. The Klippers dominated that period. After the second period the emotions must of dropped down as the Klippers trailed 3-2. Overall the Klippers controlled the play in the second but their was a patch of about 6 or 7 minutes where the Klippers had some struggles in their own zone. In the third period the Klippers got really sloppy in their own end early on and gave up back to back goals in a mater of 42 seconds. They then trailed 5-2 and Klipper fans emotions must of been down in the rails at an all time low. The roller coaster quickly started to rise back up when D Jay McGrath got the boys rolling again with his second on the night. Shortly after that , Taylor Duzan wired one from the high slot on a nice feed from Ryan Benn and suddenly the Klippers were in business. Shortly after that one of the Klippers dmen made a beauty chip pass off the left side wall to send Johnny Calkins with the puck on a three on 1. Can't remember which dman made that pass but I think it might of been Lance Tabin , but for some reason they were not credited with an apple on the score sheet. Nonetheless , great great patience by Johnny Calkins , who waited and didnt force the pass cross ice on the 2-1 , rather he waited until Braeden Adamyk entered the zone as a trailer creating a 3-1. Calkins slid a perfect pass back right on the tape for Adamyk who unloaded a huge blast that beat Hilldebrand clean. Then just over two minutes later , Braeden Adamyk with great hustle and work to not give up on the play scored once again for the GWG.
My 3 Stars....
1. Johnny Calkins - Right from the get go Johnny came to play. All night long Calkins was doing what he does best , create room and then find open team mates. He does this nice toe drag move alot that is very effective where he will protect the puck to allow his team mates that extra second to get open , and then Johnny will feather over a perfect pass. Overall the score sheet showed 3 helpers , but Calkins pretty much set up every Klipper on the ice and could have had a 5 or 6 point night. He also rang one off iron early in the first aswell.
2. Braeden Adamyk- What a performance for him tonight. He didn't overall have his best game of the season , but in the third period Dammer did what few hockey players can do, take over a hockey game. Adamyk not only scored the game tieing goal with a blasting one timer , but he then on the next shift got the game winner. Adamyk and Calkins after struggling together for a few games got back their chemistry. I think it was a good thing for them two to spend a game apart. They are now back together and will likely be back for a long time. Their confidence is sky high heading into the weekends game , which is bad news for Nipawin. They both had 3 points each in the 7-2 onslaught vs Nipawin earlier this season. Also it seems like they might have found a new running mate on that line. D Jay Mcgrath went up on the wing and played very solid.I Would be shocked if this line was not a trio heading into the weekend.
3. Brody Luhning - The Stars dmen showed a ton of great mobility all night long. He was great on the point , and jumping up in the rush. He had one goal and one assist and overall I was very impressed with the Stars Dmen. He has 12 points in 13 games with the Stars so far this season, almost a point per game dman.
Other Game Notes
- Overall the Klippers didn't have their best game defensively. Not having Sean Flanagan in the lineup due to the Junior A challenge certainly hurt this club. Overall the Klippers definitely need to be better defensively in the up coming road trip this week.
- Rockie Zinger did a great job mixing up the lines trying to find the right matchups. I think he might of struck gold with his combos near the end of the game.
- The offense which has struggled turned the corner in that third frame. All game they were buzzing but couldn't capitalize. The quick four goals in that third frame should do wonders for the offense heading into the weekend. The Klippers will also receive a huge boost with Jordon Hoffman who will be back against Nipawin after serving his one game suspension.
- One thing the Klippers need to do better is be smarter on the power play. They took a few penalties while on the PP to neglect the PP.
- Johnathon Sonntag layed out his biggest check of the season on a open ice demolition style body check. I was surprised to see Kyle Hall get up so quick after that one, but good for him.
Overall the Klippers found a way to win and that is all that matters. We shall see how they fair on the upcoming road trip. One thing for sure is the team was very happy with the win as you can tell in the post game interviews below.
