First off , wow. It's hard to say that was a game the Klippers deserved to win, but when you look at the big picture you could say they actually did deserve to win. If it wasnt for that first five minutes of the third period that saw the Melfort Mustangs come out like storm troppers , then you could say the Klippers outplayed Melfort overall. Now we have to be honest here that 5 minute span saw Melfort have about 30 chances , that left Klippers fans saying wow are we seriously still tied 2-2. After that flurry I knew the Klippers were going to win that game. Now before we get to Duzzys goal , there was a ton of chances for the Klippers to seal the deal. They had like 3 or 4 back to back Powerplays in the third including a 5 on 3 for about 24 seconds. Some how though they couldn't score on the pp if there lives depended on it last night. It was a pretty ugly site the Klippers powerplay , which really suprised me. There powerplay was great the past two games. I guess it was just one of those games.
Now after those powerplay chances you knew Melfort was going to get there chance and they did , but a solid penalty kill swung the momentum back in the Klippers favor and moments later saw Taylor Duzan walk in alone and snipe one right side. Chales Corsi had no chance. That was just a great shot by Duzzy beating a really good goaltender. Corsi had yet to lose a game this season in regulation , well you can cancel that stat.
Overall the Klippers though worked pretty hard, there powerplay may have been ugly making alot of fans think the Klippers whole game was a bad one. The fact is the Klippers outworked Melfort which is why they had so many powerplays. If the Klippers cash on one or two of those pps then its 4 or 5 to 2 Klippers.
Some stand out performances for the Klippers go to , Scotty Hellyer.
Wow Scotty may be the best kept secret in the SJHL. I actually asked Larry that after the game haha, but seriously Scott has been great the past 3 games. There were some question marks after the first road trip but Scott came back with a 2-2 record and now suddenly had a 5-2 record and is looking better each game. Last night was clearly his best performance and he was lights out all night. His biggest save came in the second period on a blast from the point on the powerplay. All kinds of traffic in front , but Hellyer stuck out the glove and flashed some leather. It was a beauty save. With Hellyer playing as good as he is and the offense striking look out !
Up Front I have to applaud Ryan Benn. I thought he was the best fwd on the ice for the Klippers. To start the season he was in tough with all the fwds , but he has worked hard , contributed offensively and is now a key player up front for the Klippers. I think he may have cemented his spot along side Kinger and Exner. He also has become a serious scoring threat creating a ton of chances and also tallyed his third on the year last night.
In other news Kiley Long was indeed cut like I reported before the game. It was a tough decision for Larry but it was all about getting down to the numbers. You can hear Larrys reaction to this in the interview I will post shortly. Tough break for Kiley though , he was a great kid , good guy to talk to and a great teamate.
As for the Klippers they are now 3-0 at home. Pretty impressive stuff. There next test will be La Ronge on Saturday. This one should be interesting to say the least.
Check back later today I will have a NHL preview up. I know I am mainly reporting on the Klippers on this blog , but I gotta get in on the NHL action aswell.
