Monday Morning Hit List

Hope you had a great weekend, but back to work and time to hit on a few things.

We start with a few Klipper tidbits. First being former Klipper trainer Neal Bruetsch. With the Klippers hiring a new trainer many may be wondering where Neal may be going. Well it didn't take long for Bruetsch to get picked up as he was hired out in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and will be the new trainer for the Brooks Bandits. Great to see Neal land a new gig so fast, he certainly has a ton of experience spending the past 3 season with the Klippers and I wish him the best of luck. Neal is a great guy and was great around the community throughout the years. I got to know him very well over the past season being his roomy for most of the road trips. Sad to see him go but at the same time I am happy Neal has an exciting new opportunity to look forward to.

I knew about this for a few weeks but can now make it blog post worthy as it was confirmed online via the Brandon Sun. Wheaton King has been invited to the Medicine Hat Tigers training camp and will compete for a spot on the squad. It certainly would not surprise me if Wheaton does stick with the club but at the same time being 19 years of age he may be in tough. King of course is very familiar with the WHL having playing out in Brandon before arriving in Kindersley. It Would be a huge loss for the Klippers offense if King sticks but at the same time it would be a good look for the organization. If he does come back to the Klippers I am really looking forward to seeing what Wheaton and D Jay McGrath can do on a line together. They showed great chemistry down the stretch last season.

In the CFL who would of thought that my Edmonton Eskimos would be 2-0 and the Saskatchewan Roughriders would be 0-2. Now I am not saying the Esks are destined for the Grey Cup or anything of that nature but they certainly are looking like they are buying into their new systems. Watching the Eskimo game this past weekend brought a smile to my face. The offensive play calling has been great so far and the Eskimos no longer have that predictability they have had for the past few years. Everyone keeps saying the old Ricky Ray is back, I think we are watching the same Ricky Ray but it had just been bad play calling and lack of protection that had lead to a few lackluster seasons.

In terms of the Riders, it appears more and more that this season may be a rebuilding year. I know most fans don't want to admit it but it may be true. I was reading Mitchell Blairs blog this morning and he made a few great points. He mentioned that the combination of injuries and defections has become evident for this club and has taken its toll.

Here is Mitchell's quote :

" At one time, the Riders could see player after player after player go down, but a replacement was there. That is no longer the case. There is still a lot of talent on this team, but that talent is young and has to grow much like Darian Durant did. Players like Terrence Nunn, Marc Parenteau, Nick Graham, Chris Graham and Jerrell Freeman are still learning this game and when they do, they will be solid at their positions. The rebuilding phase has started. "

I agree with what he has said above, but I would add that the young players just may need a few more games in the CFL. By week 6 we will likely have a fair assessment of where the young players are at and if the Riders will be able to compete for the Grey Cup. They hit the road for their next two games which certainly makes things tougher but I do have them penciled down to beat the Ti Cats.

Over the weekend Derek Jeter hit the 3000 mark which is an extraordinary feat. Congrats to Derek, I am not going to break down his numbers because I do not have enough baseball knowledge to do so, but the one thing I found very interesting about all this regards the fan who caught the historic baseball.

He returned the ball to Jeter after the game and all he got in return was Yankee tickets for the rest of the season for him and three friends. Sure that's great but are you kidding me buddy?

He likely could of got over 100 000 dollars online. I don't care how big of fan you are of your team and Jeter but catching that ball was like being handed a pay cheque that said fill in how much money you want and hand me back my baseball. It was a nice gesture, but when you take into consideration how much money Jeter has, his five World Series rings, and not to mention a smoke show of a girlfriend, I am sure Jeter would of been more than ok with handing out a few hundred ginos for the baseball.

That's it for now, in terms of Klipper news things have died done a bit after news was flying around right, left and center. I am hearing a few rumors here and their but nothing with enough substance as of right now. In terms of the new Klippers trainer and assistant coach, I hope to catch up with them via phone sometime this week.

Happy Monday to you, chat with ya later.

  3. Kissick would make a good captain for sure but his time will come. There are some good solid 18 and 19 year olds who could wear the C for the Klippers over the next couple of years.

  7. Ullsy, any chance of snapping some pictures of the rink project for the out-of-towners to see? We need something exciting since the Riders seem to be laying eggs so far, not like your Grey Cup bound Edmonton Eskimos!

  8. I think the town of Kyle should take some of their Kraft $25,000 and put up a statue of Johnny C out front of the rink! First Gordie, then Gretz and now Calks!

  9. Good to see all the comments on the blog.

    - As for the captain situation, I will put an end to the poll either today or tomorrow and hit on a few things and give my choice for captain.

    - As for the status on the Klipper players from the Flanagan trade, that I do not know. Last time I talked to Rockie he was excited about the 3 players, but I have also heard a few rumblings about potential deals. We will wait and see for now

    - For the rink project I have some pics we have used for news stories on our station website. Rink looks great and everyday more progress is made. I will snap a few pics today and post them up.
